STORYTELLING AND WONDER

One of the goals of storytelling is to engage wonder.5 One of the best ways for children to enter stories is to have the opportunity to re-create them. For young children, acting out the story works very well. However, reenacting the story is not the end—it is merely a means for helping children enter the story and to help them wonder. Afterward, asking each child who played a role to express his or her feelings about being Deborah, King Saul, Jairus, or Miriam can help children enter the wondering place. Following this discussion with the question, “I wonder what God was doing in this story?” can help children orient toward a God who is at work in the world.

Asking middle-to-older elementary children to write the background story for children (or others) in the Bible can facilitate their entering the wondering place as well. Examples of “expanding the story” prompts could include:
